Most livestock in Tanzania are indigenous breeds, low milk yielding and small in size. MDA's livestock improvement program works to upgrade the indigenous cows by cross breeding them with high pedigreed bulls. The produced calves are larger and better milk yielders, which increases the income of the local livestock keepers. So far, 150 farm families are involved in this project.
Livestock improvement program activities:
Supplying bulls to communities
Providing veterinary services
Vaccinations
Castration of scrub bulls
Training of beneficiaries
Development of a milk-marketing system
Provision of credit packages to the livestock keepers
